Old slate roofs outlast the details holding them together. Caught early, most of the original roof can be saved.
Slates may be sound while the iron nails holding them rust through, called nail sickness, so they slip one by one. Re-fixing in time saves the original slate.
Lead channels carry water off the roof and behind the parapet wall. They are the classic weak point, and when they split or block, water goes straight inside.
Ridge tiles work loose, finials go missing, and old lime mortar washes out of the joints. Small losses, but they let weather in and the building loses its detail.

Your local authority’s conservation officer can advise, and a formal declaration can confirm what’s exempt. Straightforward like-for-like repairs on an unprotected house usually don’t need permission. We’re happy to work within whatever the requirements are.
Yes. We salvage and reuse the slates that are still sound and source matching natural slate or reclaimed slate for the rest, laid in the original pattern, including diminishing courses where the slates get smaller toward the ridge.
Old roofs were built to breathe. Sealing one up with the wrong materials traps moisture and rots the timber. We use breathable build-ups and lime where the building needs them, so the roof works the way it was designed to.
