Slate Roofing in Dublin

Slate is the classic Irish roof, and it is what most of Dublin’s older homes were built with. Done right, a slate roof outlives the people who fit it. We fit and repair natural slate and fibre-cement slate, and match reclaimed slate on period roofs so repairs disappear into the original.

Your options

Natural slate or fibre-cement?

There are two main families of slate, and the right one depends on the look you want, the age and structure of your roof, and your budget. Here’s the honest difference.

Spanish natural slate

The most common natural slate in Ireland. A real stone roof at a sensible price, long-lasting and right at home on most Dublin houses.

Welsh & Irish slate

The premium heritage choice. A deeper color and the traditional look for period and protected homes are at the top of the price range.

Fibre-cement slate

Man-made slate that’s lighter and cheaper, with a uniform finish. The sensible middle ground when the budget’s tight or the roof can’t take the weight of stone.

What's included

Our slate roofing service

New slate roofs, full re-slating, and repairs to the slate roof you have got. Natural slate or fibre-cement, on everything from one slipped slate to a whole period terrace. Each slate job can cover:

  • New slate roofs and full re-slating in natural or fibre-cement slate, laid in proper courses throughout
  • Slate repairs covering slipped, cracked, or missing slates, including nail sickness where old fixings corrode
  • Matching reclaimed or salvaged slate on period and conservation roofs, so every repair blends straight in
  • Ridge, hip, and valley work, along with the leadwork that seals every junction on the roof properly
  • Structural checks before natural slate goes on, since stone is heavy and an older roof may need strengthening
  • Proper underlay and battens, double-nailing throughout, and stainless fixings or wind clips near the coast

Nail sickness is why sound slates end up on the ground, the slate outlasts the nail holding it. We save every slate we can. You get a written fixed price before any work, with workmanship cover.

WHICH SLATE

Natural Slate Or Fibre-Cement

Both give you a proper slate roof, and the right one depends on your house, your budget, and the years ahead.

Natural Slate

Real stone with a century in it, and the only right answer on period roofs. Costs more, lasts longest.

Fibre-Cement Slate

Lighter, neater, and kinder on the budget, with a consistent finish. The sensible call on most modern homes.

Weight Decides Too

Natural slate is heavy, older roofs get structural check first. Fibre-cement roofs that cannot carry stone.

What it costs

Slate roof cost in Dublin

Natural slate costs more upfront than fibre-cement or concrete tile, but it is the longest-lasting roof covering you can buy. Over the life of the house, it often works out the cheaper choice. Price comes down to a few things. The slate type, the roof size and pitch.

How complex it is, since valleys, hips, dormers, and chimneys all add work, then stripping the old roof, any rotten timber found once it is off, the leadwork, and the access. Use the calculator for a guide, then book a free survey for a fixed written price.

What affects the price

  • Slate type: fibre-cement, Spanish, or premium Welsh/Irish
  • Roof size and pitch (steeper costs more)
  • Valleys, hips, dormers and chimneys
  • Stripping the old roof and any timber repairs
  • Leadwork, access and scaffolding

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers from an experienced, hands-on roofing professional.

Natural slate is the longest-lasting roof covering there is, and a well-laid, well-maintained one will easily outlive most other materials. Fiber-cement slate doesn’t last as long but still gives many years of good service. We’ll give you a realistic lifespan for the slate you choose.

Natural slate looks better, lasts longer, and suits period homes, but it costs more and is heavier. Fiber-cement is lighter, cheaper, and uniform, and it’s the sensible choice when the budget’s tight or the roof can’t take the weight of stone. We’ll be honest about which suits your house.

Natural slate is heavy. If you’re going from a light covering to stone, the roof structure may need checking and sometimes strengthening first. We check this at the survey before recommending natural slate so you’re not hit with a surprise once the old roof’s off.

Yes. We repair slipped and cracked slates, and on older or period roofs, we source matching reclaimed slate so the repair blends in rather than standing out. See our conservation roofing and roof repairs.
