Why a skylight

What a skylight does for a room

A lot of Irish homes have a dark core: a landing with no window, a gloomy attic, and a hall the light never reaches. A skylight in the right spot changes the whole feel of it.

Daylight where there's none

A roof window over a landing, stairwell or attic floods it with daylight from above, the one direction those rooms can actually get light.

Fresh air, less condensation

Opening skylights let warm, damp air out of bathrooms, kitchens, and attic rooms, cutting the condensation that builds up in sealed spaces.

A brighter, warmer home

Good double or triple glazing keeps the heat in while letting the light through, and a bright, airy room is one buyers notice.

What's included

Our skylight installation service

From picking the right window to a tidy, finished opening inside, we handle the whole job with our own crew. Every skylight fits pitched or flat roofs, in slate, tile or felt, including:

  • Choose from a roof window, flat-roof skylight, lantern or sun tunnel
  • Fixed, manual, electric or solar opening windows, with blinds if wanted
  • Cutting and framing the opening, then flashing it watertight
  • Insulated, plastered internal reveal, the finished surround inside the room
  • Conservation roof windows for period- and protected-homes
  • Replacing or repairing old, leaking or misted skylight

Every window gets flashed into the roof by roofers who do it every week, not fitted and hoped for. You get a written fixed price before any work, and workmanship cover behind it.

WHICH WINDOW

Right Window For The Right Room

Skylights are not one product, and the right one depends on the room below it. These are the four we fit most, and where each belongs.

Roof Window

Opens for air and sits in a pitched roof. Right choice for attic rooms, landings, and bedrooms.

Flat-Roof Skylight

Fixed or opening glass for extensions and kitchens under a flat roof, pulling daylight straight down.

Roof Lantern

Raised glass structure over a kitchen or living space, adding light and height in one go.

Sun Tunnel

Small mirrored tube running daylight from the roof into windowless halls, bathrooms, and stairs.

What it costs

Skylight installation cost in Dublin

Fitting one fixed roof window is a modest job. A row of electric windows or a big roof lantern is a different matter. That is why an honest price starts with a look at the roof.

Window type, size, and count move the price most, along with glazing, whether it opens, the roof type, and the internal finishing. Use our Roof Cost Calculator for a guide. Then book a free survey and we will put a fixed price in writing.

What affects the price

  • Type: roof window, flat skylight, lantern or sun tunnel
  • Size, number, and whether they open
  • Glazing: double or triple, solar control, blinds
  • Roof type and access
  • Internal finishing of the reveal

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers from an experienced, hands-on roofing professional.

Usually not, especially for a skylight to the rear of the house. If your home’s a protected structure or in a conservation area, or the skylight noticeably changes how the roof looks from the street, you may need approval. It’s worth checking with your local authority, and we can advise.

Roof windows suit attics, landings, and stairwells. Flat-roof skylights or a roof lantern work best on extensions and kitchens. A sun tunnel is ideal for a windowless room like a bathroom or hallway. We’ll recommend the right one for your roof and room.

Not if it’s flashed in properly, and that’s exactly the part roofers get right. Most skylight leaks come from a poor flashing job around the window, so we seal it into the slate, tile or flat roof correctly. See our roof flashings.

Yes. We replace old, plastic, or misted units with new glass roof windows, and we repair leaks, which usually come down to the flashing or a failed seal. See our roof repairs.
