A green roof costs more than a bare flat roof because there’s a full build-up and planting on top of the waterproofing. It earns some of that back: the planting shields the waterproof layer from the sun, which can help it last longer, and it soaks up rainwater off the roof. What drives the price is the type (a light sedum roof is the most affordable, a roof garden the dearest), the size, any structural work, and the access. A green roof only works if the waterproofing under it is spot on, because a leak under soil and plants is hard to trace. That’s exactly why we put the time into the watertight, root-proof base before anything green goes on.
A green roof is heavy, more so when it’s wet, so the structure has to suit it. A light sedum roof is fine on many flat roofs, but a deeper roof garden needs a structure built for the weight. We check this before we recommend anything.
A sedum roof is low-maintenance: the odd weeding and a watering in a long dry spell. Wildflower and roof-garden types need a bit more attention. We’ll tell you straight what your roof will ask of you.
